AFA’s show “Referencing Fiber” at Pflugerville Library hangs September 23 through November 11th. The reception for drew a dozen of the participants as well as members of the public. Attendees spent a pleasant rainy afternoon examining the art while sipping lemonade and eating cookies, with fruit and pretzels for those watching their diets. The show displayed works in a range of techniques that hung harmoniously together. Thanks to jurors Maryann Nalos, Kathy York and Sherri Lipman McCauley for doing a wonderful job. More thanks to Sherri for overseeing the event and to all her helpers for hanging the...

AFA Booth at 2016 QuiltFest Showcases Members’ Talents

AFA’s first venture of selling as a group resulted in a delightful boutique filled with a wide array of items that used various fiber techniques. The booth drew lots of attention and positive comments. While a variety of beautiful art was on display, the best sellers smaller useful items such as journals, bowls, cards and scarves. The booth promoted AFA, as well, providing flyers announcing our meeting dates. People wearing ribbons corresponding to the awards their quilt had won wandered through all day and many of our members came by wearing theirs. We are a talented group- here’s a list of booth participants: Susan Axel Bedsaul: hand dyes, Sara Sharp: Art quilts, Diane Barney: owls & shirts, Meg Wilson: woven pins, Mary Macaulay: felted items, Patty Koeninger: hand dyed fabrics, Patricia Day: Hand woven wraps, April Sullivan: framed yarn pictures, Cathy Swindle: handwoven scarves, Sandra Doak: Handwoven scarves and shawls, Sue Gilliam: collaged items, Anita Mester: fabric bowls, journals, bags and postcards, Lori Bier: hand painted silk...

AFA At Quiltfest – September 16-18, 2016

Here’s a great opportunity to show and sell your work at a fiber arts event that attracts hundreds of attendees! The Austin Fiber Artists will have a booth at the Austin Area Quilt Guild’s QuiltFest 2016. We are looking for lots of smaller pieces, preferably for immediate sale. Items may hang on booth walls or be placed on tables, with similar pieces held in reserve to replace those that sell. At the show, the AFA booth team will arrange the items to create a varied and appealing display given the space limitations. This may mean that not all of your pieces will be on display at once. AFA will man the booth, collect the money, calculate and pay the sales taxes, and distribute the proceeds to the artists less AFA’s commission. TO PARTICIPATE: You may submit any number of one-of-a-kind artwork or multiples of types of handmade merchandise such as handbags, stuffed toys, scarves, pins, etc. Any type of fiber item is acceptable. You are responsible for setting the before-tax sales price for your work. You are responsible for delivering an inventory of the pieces you submit along with the items themselves. You may submit as many salable items as you like with no entry fee; a commission of 20% will be taken if they sell. You may submit only one non-salable item; a $10 entry fee is required. Items will be reviewed by a selection committee to ensure they are appropriate for this event. This show is open to Austin Fiber Artists only. CALENDAR: February 1: Show Announcement July 1: Open for Submission- email pictures to president@austinfiberartists.org September...

Butridge Gallery Show: “Threads in the Tapestry of Austin” May 2015

The Austin Fiber Artists’ show at the Dougherty Art Center’s Julia C. Butridge Gallery was a beautiful and wide-ranging showing of fiber arts. Quilting, felting, dyeing, string painting, weaving, basketry, two dimensional, three dimensional, serious, whimsical, brightly colored, subtly colored- there was something there for everyone. Part of the exhibit was a members’ wall where all the pieces reflected the show’s theme of “threads in the tapestry of Austin” by depicting an Austin icon. Part of this challenge was that all works had to be rendered in black, white and one additional color. Interesting themes developed spontaneously as different people chose a similar Austin emblem but realized it in different styles. The show was juried by San Antonio fiber artist Miki Rodriguez, who also attended the opening. She explained how she looked for works that surprised her and held the eye while demonstrating good technique and artistic principles. AFA is grateful for her care and vision in selecting the pieces; the show was much admired for its professionalism and...

AFA Members Add Their Threads to Austin’s Tapestry

As part of our upcoming exhibit in Dougherty Arts Center’s Julia Butridge Gallery, there will be a special wall of our members’ work. Inspired by all the wonderful images that thinking of Austin brings to mind, the members will create artwork with an Austin icon. The challenge is that the piece must use black, white, and only ONE color! Austin Fiber Artists always create lovely work, but the overall impact of this wall will be a work in itself! Come visit it starting May 27th through July 4th. (For more information on the exact requirements for the artwork, see the entry form for that...
