AFA Booth at 2016 QuiltFest Showcases Members’ Talents

AFA’s first venture of selling as a group resulted in a delightful boutique filled with a wide array of items that used various fiber techniques. The booth drew lots of attention and positive comments. While a variety of beautiful art was on display, the best sellers smaller useful items such as journals, bowls, cards and scarves. The booth promoted AFA, as well, providing flyers announcing our meeting dates. People wearing ribbons corresponding to the awards their quilt had won wandered through all day and many of our members came by wearing theirs. We are a talented group- here’s a list of booth participants: Susan Axel Bedsaul: hand dyes, Sara Sharp: Art quilts, Diane Barney: owls & shirts, Meg Wilson: woven pins, Mary Macaulay: felted items, Patty Koeninger: hand dyed fabrics, Patricia Day: Hand woven wraps, April Sullivan: framed yarn pictures, Cathy Swindle: handwoven scarves, Sandra Doak: Handwoven scarves and shawls, Sue Gilliam: collaged items, Anita Mester: fabric bowls, journals, bags and postcards, Lori Bier: hand painted silk...

Fiber Fun for 2016 Maker Fair Attendees

The weaving and spinning wheel demonstrations fascinated both techies and artists. We furthered the idea of fiber as art and elevated AFA’s...

Volunteers from AFA added fun and fiber education to the Women’s Empowerment Conference (WECon 2016). Using materials from the donation table, we created opportunities for conference attendees to come and sit a while and create something lovely to take home with them. The bookmarks made from glued fabric scraps were as popular as ever and we added finger weaving from donated yarn as well as denim embroidery projects. The tapestry frame attracted many contributing stitches,...

AFA Supports BCRC’s Art Bra Austin 2016

The Breast Cancer Resource Center (BCRC) will hold its annual signature fundraiser “Art Bra Austin” in June, with the help of four AFA members. This event features wildly and wittily decorated bras which are auctioned for charity. The Austin Fiber Artists and Art Bra Austin make a great pairing (no pun intended)- the artists can use all their fiber tricks and techniques to support a great cause. See this year’s crop of submissions- From Rachele Misiti- Griffin: From Donna Bone- All Buttoned Up From Margee Halsch- Climb Every Mountain From Lori Bier- Storm Front (with silver...
